Our Global team was tasked to find people diagnosed with Glioma, a type of brain tumour. We had a list of similar conditions we could include, like solid tumours that had metastasized, but all patients needed to be currently affected by the tumour and currently receiving treatment.
We did our research and knew this would be extremely challenging due to the symptoms and treatment and also due to the patient simply having a lot to deal with. We knew that attending research, however important, was likely not high on their priority list.
As a start we launched the recruit nationwide in the US, we searched databases tirelessly, but when we didn’t come across any patients we didn’t stop there. We focussed in on large markets only, where we hoped we could find clusters of potential respondents.
We reached out to support groups and patient associations to connect with those who knew this battle intimately. Throughout this process, we kept detailed records of our efforts and the feedback we were getting from the people we spoke with.
Even after our determined efforts, the team were not quite meeting the quota. Engaging patients currently suffering with this debilitating and scary condition was restrictive given the additional needs and priorities of each participant.
We discussed the option of opening up to patients in remission with the client, who agreed. We found a way to bridge the gap between what the client needed and what we could offer.
The patients provided invaluable insights based on their very recent recollection of their treatments and we learned the importance of keeping records and staying true to our values.
